Witness
When resigning ourselves to some outcome we feel powerless to influence, we often speak of the 'powers that be'. "If only the powers that be would do such and such", we lament. To think this way is a salve for our pain, but masking that pain also hides a nugget: what if we were the powers that be?
Ancient courts had established a standard whereby two witnesses could verify the truth of a matter. This ancient practice recognized direct observation and involvement as more significant than relating a second-hand story.
Discussion is good, but action holds power. We can talk about cycling, but riding our bikes is better. When we ride, we are witnesses.
