Riding Single file to solve Columns Drive conflict ?
I've heard from an AJC article and a post on the Yahoo Group sundayride that the meeting between Columns Drive residents and cyclists has resulted in a proposal to enforce riding single file.
This probably would address the concerns of the motorists unable to pass groups of riders. What I find interesting is that we need to pass a law that enforces bike etiquette.
Georgia law permits cyclists to ride two abreast on the right-most part of the lane as practical, but in every group I've ridden with, we drop to single file to let cars pass or negotiate narrow stretches.
For years I thought it was the motorists who needed the education. It appears that the cycling community needs to do a better job educating our fellow cyclists.
You'll also find a post at the sundayride group imploring the cyclists not to give up rights out of a fear of the consequences. I agree that fear should not be a factor in decision-making. I also agree that mandating courtesy delivers the point, but teaches the wrong lesson. It doesn't matter what your status in life, if you're in someone else's way, it's rude to intentionally ignore them. Does a traffic citation teach this?
Education is the way to go.
