Remember man that you are ...

What do these two things have in common?

  1. Ansley's helping me with quotes for my Cycling Fortune Cookies.
  2. Repairing the broken impeller on my leaf vacuum.

The answer surprised me how well they ended up tying together. Some background would be appropriate.

Ansley has taken an interest in helping me with my Fortune Cookies at the top of this page. We'll come up with common sayings and then change a few words to make it into a cycling quote. Some of the better ones have been:

  • The cyclists are coming! The cyclists are coming! -- Paul Revere's other Midnight Ride.
  • What Would Lance Do.
  • I regret that I have but one bicycle that I can ride at a time. -- Nathan Hale after his first bike ride

OK, now the impeller on the leaf vacuum. After taking it apart, and reassembling, there was some dust that needed to be cleaned up. The thought popped into my head and came out my mouth before I gave it any thought: Remember man that you are dust and to dust you shall return. I always liked the rhythm of those words and the "Carpe Diem" urging of the message behind those words, and the saying just came out.

Ansley didn't hesitate: Remember man that you are a cyclist and to cycling you shall return.

Magnificent.

After the oil is gone, after personal motor vehicles become museum pieces, after cars are little more than a memory, we'll still be riding bikes.
